What is a Grid Service?
Grid Services, also known as Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), are a connected network of energy resources, typically home batteries, used to reduce stress on the grid. VPP participants get paid for their contributions to help stabilize demand. These payments are given based on the energy the home saves the grid from having to produce.
SDCP’s Solar Battery Savings Program is a one-of-a-kind battery incentive program that provides customers thousands of dollars in up-front rebates for batteries. Additionally, they get to participate in grid services by discharging their battery 1-4 hours a day and getting paid $0.10/kWh for doing so.
- Current estimate of annual ongoing payment is $200-300 per year
- Can choose the percentage of their battery that participates, as well as how often to participate*
- Customers can also collect additional rebates if they qualify (SGIP, DAC-SASH, etc)

*Savings are based on avg price of $17,250 for a tesla battery and is the combination of the SDCP Battery rebate and financing using a Prepaid Lease Option. Actual savings amount vary and are dependent on payment method, battery number, and other factors. The full SDCP rebate amount included in this calculation is available only to members of SDCP in a designated Community of Concern or those enrolled in either the CARE or FERA programs. The SDCP Solar Battery Savings Program offers an up front rebate of $350/kWh for SDCP customers to get a battery. Customers must agree to terms and conditions of the program, which include participating in grid services and earning ongoing payments for discharging their battery. **The Tesla Powerwall 3 rebate is offered and administered solely by Tesla. Eligibility, rebate amounts ($500 per unit, up to $1,000), and program deadlines, including ordering between November 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026 and installation/registration by December 31, 2026, are determined by Tesla and may change at any time.
